Casa Lar: the story of Linus and the meaning of welcoming

When a child is forced to cross borders by pain, what they need most is not just shelter. They need time, presence, and people willing to walk with them until life makes sense again.

This is how Linus and his brother arrived in Brazil, coming from Congo. Without references, without mastering the language, and marked by profound ruptures, they found in Casa Lar Aliança a place where they were not only welcomed, but also supported. They remained there for about five years, enough time for roots to be put down and a future to begin to take shape.

Today, the Alliance of Mercy received the news that Linus has graduated and currently lives in New York with his father and siblings. An important step in a journey that began with vulnerability and continues to be marked by overcoming adversity.

The Foster Home as a concrete response to vulnerability.

Casa Lar Aliança is part of the social work of Aliança de Misericórdia. Each unit welcomes children and adolescents who, for various reasons, have needed to be separated from their families. The work carried out goes beyond immediate protection: it involves education, daily support, human development, and the rebuilding of family ties.

In the daily life of Casa Lar, the mission translates into simple and constant gestures: guaranteeing schooling, guiding choices, teaching limits, encouraging dreams and, above all, offering a stable presence in moments of fragility.

It is in this context that Linus's story takes on deeper dimensions. Not as an isolated case, but as the result of a process built with patience and commitment.

“"You showed me the way"”

In a message sent to the Alliance, Linus makes a point of recalling each step of this journey. He remembers arriving in Brazil "knowing nothing" and gradually learning to write his own story.

In his testimony, he acknowledges that he received more than just material care. He received direction, guidance, and clear references on what is right and what should not be done. He states that the educators were "a safe haven," people who held his hand when he couldn't walk alone.

Linus also emphasizes that everything he has achieved, what he is building today, and what he still hopes to achieve bears the mark of his time at the Children's Home. For him, the advice he received did not remain in the past: it has become fundamental to his adult life.

A mission that continues to create a future.

Linus's testimony of gratitude doesn't end one story. It points to many others that continue to be written daily in the Casa Lar units, by children and teenagers who are still on their journey, learning, falling, getting up, and planning for the future.

The mission of the Alliance of Mercy remains the same: to be where life is most fragile and to support processes that restore dignity, meaning, and hope.
