June 16: International Day of the African Child

On June 16, we celebrate the International Day of the African Child, a date established by the Organization of African Unity in 1991, in memory of the tragic events of the Soweto massacre, which occurred in 1976 in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. On that day, thousands of students gathered to peacefully protest against the low quality of education and the imposition of the Afrikaans language, spoken only by a white minority. The police's brutal repression resulted in hundreds of deaths and injuries, many of them children and young people between 10 and 20 years old.

This date is a milestone for reflection on the protection of children against all forms of violence and the importance of quality education that respects the culture and history of African children. It is also a moment of global awareness in favor of young Africans, aiming to build a future where stories of violence and repression are not repeated.

Action of the Alliance of Mercy in Mozambique

In 2017, Aliança de Misericórdia began its mission in Mozambique with the arrival of missionaries from the Community of Life. In the African country, the Project “I Prefer Paradise” seeks to provide education and opportunities for children and young people, empowering them for a future of dignity and hope.

The Alliance's work extends to Aldeia da Massaca, in the district of Boane, where it supports around 900 residents. The actions are centered on the Escolinha Comunitária dos Pequenos Libombos, which meets the urgent needs of the community.
