In July 2017, the Associação Aliança de Misericórdia started its work in Maputo, Mozambique, and after an initial process of enculturation, it was possible to know the needs of the local population and segment the services.
Currently, the Association serves more than 60 children in a Community School in Massaca, a village that belongs to the Boane district, where it carries out educational activities and also mobilizes so that the little ones can have at least one meal a day.
In the Hulene neighborhood is the largest landfill in Maputo, known as the dump. Around three thousand people work daily in the “mining” of recyclables in the most precarious and extreme situations. For these people, Aliança offers the “I prefer Paradise” project, whose main objective is to enable mothers and children, who survive from the work of garbage collectors, to have access to more nutritious food, support for health and human development .
At the “Centro Paraíso”, a space affectionately named by the children assisted, Aliança offers food and nutritional support, thematic training on health care and sanitary precautions, society and worldviews and self-care. And also, economic guidance, cooking, professional training and artistic presentations.
The children have educational follow-up and food and health support. Healthy conviviality and leisure provide a moment of relief and rest for these mothers who suffer so much to feed and care for their children. It is also noticeable the decrease in the incidence of diseases in children after the beginning of the project, due to less exposure to the unhealthy environment of the dump and the sanitary knowledge acquired by the mothers.
